  • I think it is not necessary for there to be bosses or castles. If you wanted to have bosses and castles, the organizers should handle them I think, as otherwise you end up with too many castles. This is a scope increase for the organizers, though. There are also other ways in which castles could be done, like by handing them out to volunteers. BUT. I would be careful not to bite off more than you can chew for a first go-around with the idea. If the general concepts of this whole structure have proven themselves, then having an additional round for castle design seems like a good addition for a 2nd community episode, rather than the first trial.
i think a bowser's castle at the end of the episode where the contest is held for individual rooms would probably be exempt from this either way, since it won't end up extremely long on a single playthrough due to the rooms being parallel, and you don't have to enforce a super strict theme due to there being an expected degree of variety
of course, there's also the option of a castle contest which accepts the 'creme de la creme' as it were, only passing one or two (if we also have fortresses) levels per world, but this carries the risk of there being too many genuinely good submissions that there's no room for, so i agree it's not something to haphazardly jump into

regarding difficulty (and this is definitely personal bias speaking), if anyone's seriously considering this i don't think it'd be a bad idea to also take submissions for super hard, completely optional postgame content where participants of more deviant predispositions can leave their mark doing what they're really passionate about too
this depends a lot on whether the organization team has people with the patience and necessary skill at the game to properly judge these kinds of levels for what they are, so i doubt anyone would hold it against anyone if this wasn't implemented, but those are my two cents nevertheless

good luck to those who try their hand, seems like an interesting enough concept
