PNG support has been a thing in SMBX2 for YEARS. I don't know where you got your info from X2 from, but it's very clearly wrong.

I should note that GIFs are still supported in SMBX2, however this is mainly for the sake of legacy compatibility with older episodes, since it is built on a hacked version of SMBX 1.3.
